Stephen Bruno's studio brushes and painting tools

My life's artistic journey started as a young boy growing up in the Bronx when my father gave me a small set of paints with a few brushes. He tried to paint and gave it up so I got the paint set. That small paint set and brushes, along with limited family finances that didn't support a budding artist, forced an exploration of color combinations using the three primary colors. That exploration continues today with a purposefully limited palette of oils, combined with burnt umber, white, and refined linseed oil as a medium. My large collection of brushes and palette knives as well as the odd household item creatively adds textures to my work. My boyish heart was ignited with a passion that still exists today.

In my early years I also worked with marble sculpturing and later used live models as subject for my portraits. I tried my hand at watercolor but was unhappy with my results. I enjoy painting Plein Air, stopping with my paint box on the side of the road if I see an interesting subject. I carried my paint box in my travels through Italy selling to galleries, and one of those works hangs in a museum in Germany. I now have a professional studio located in rural SE Tennessee, and paint with oils almost every day.

I had limited art instruction and developed my own unique technique and style which, as I'm told, is "unmistakable and cannot be confused with other artists". I am mainly known as being a self-representing artist, promoting and selling my work over the internet and with past exhibitions and involvement of dealers and galleries in New York City, Italy, the Ft Lauderdale and Miami area of Florida, as well as the Asheville / Hendersonville area of North Carolina.

Historically, my eclectic styles ranged from fine art, including portraits, abstract, contemporary, and realism. For a while I focused on portraits and figures, but now, in my senior years, I focus mainly on painting colorful landscapes and flowers, and occasionally a city scene. My objective is to show a small sampling of the diversity of my work and to provide a platform for the public to enjoy my work — my passion.
